One of the most popular strategies for budget traveling is to make what is traditionally one of the most expensive parts of travel the airfare free.
One great way to score free flights without tediously collecting frequent flier miles is to get yourself bumped off of the flight on which you are booked.
While getting bumped won’t make your current flight free, it will traditionally score you a free ticket you can use at a later date of your choosing.
Getting bumped is such a popular money saving strategy that there is a definite art and science behind it. Remember that you may not be the only person on your flight hoping to get bumped. It is important to follow the guidelines listed below to increase your chances.
- Book your flight with the intention of getting bumped. For instance, you may want to choose one of the first flights of the day, knowing that you will be able to get on a later flight after you are bumped and still reach your destination.
- Always ask if the flight is overbooked. It may be a good idea to call your travel agent the night before the scheduled flight to inquire. Always ask the gate agent if the flight is overbooked as soon as you arrive and let him or her know you will volunteer to be bumped.
- Always back a flight schedule for your departure and destination airport. Be sure to get a schedule that includes all airlines, not just the one on which you are booked.
- Always arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes prior to scheduled departure. Try to be the first one in the check in line. Being the first in line will ensure that you are the first on the list of volunteers to be bumped.
- Before you agree to be bumped, be sure that the airline will offer a free ticket or other significant compensation. Individual airline policies vary, so be sure you know what is being offered.
- Some airlines offer vouchers in $100 increments, according to the time you must wait for another flight. For instance, a one hour wait entitles you to a $100 voucher, two hours means you get $200, etc.
- Before accepting your free ticket or travel voucher, let the gate agent know that you need to be sure of your arrangements for your current flight. Always make sure you are holding a confirmed reservation and boarding pass for a later flight before signing the agreement and accepting the free ticket.
- Tell the gate agent that you want a guaranteed, confirmed reservation on the next flight to your destination.
- If there are no guaranteed seats available on the next flight, inform the agent that you want a guaranteed seat on another airline.
- Use the flight schedule you packed to choose an alternative flight and airline.
- If the wait for the next flight exceeds two hours, ask the gate agent for meal vouchers. Most airlines make these vouchers available, but they do not always offer them without being asked.
- If you get bumped from your next flight, you could score another free ticket. It pays to be flexible any time you are flying on a budget.
- Remember there are no hard and fast rules everyone must follow. There are some regulations, but each airline sets its own policy with regard to bumping policy and compensation.
- The bumping rules are generally different for international flights, so be sure to ask the airline about their policies before volunteering.

No matter how one goes about it these days, traveling is an expensive proposition. With fuel prices soaring, flying is often more economical than driving, especially if one knows how to go about booking in advance on the internet. Many people each year use the internet to purchase flight tickets and find more cheap flights because they did so.
Some details that one must work out in advance include when one expects to be traveling, where one wants to depart from, and where one wants to end up. Is a nonstop flight necessary, or would a connecting flight, with or without a layover, make the trip more economical by lowering the price? What accommodations will be needed at the destination end of the trip? Will it be a one way or round trip? (more…)

When I was growing up, they were stewardesses, and they had a party hearty reputation that stuck despite all the hard work they did. Today, the word ’stewardess’ is out of fashion, and flight attendants are respected professionals in the aviation industry. While many in the general public see flight attendants as glorified airborne waitresses, the cabin crews and regular passengers know better. The flight attendant is the face of the airline, and her – or his, since many flight attendants today are male – primary job is making sure that all the passengers have a safe flight.
But you knew that – that’s part of the reason that you want to be a flight attendant. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it’s not quite as hard to find a flight attendant job opening as many believe. Besides the major airlines – many of whom are not hiring – there are over 75 airlines operating in the United States and Canada, and you’ll find a flight attendant job opening at most of them. The fastest growing segment of the aviation industry is in private airlines – charters, fractional operators and company-owned (more…)

Ever since I was a child I wanted to go to Disney Land. I used to see the adverts on television, I was in love with the characters in all of the cartoons, and I was just desperate to go. I think at the time it was inconceivable for my parents to be able to afford it, and eventually I came to understand that it just wasn’t possible. The problem with this is that it left a bit of a hangover in my mind about going on holiday to America. I always had it that it would be just too expensive, but in actual fact, the cost of travelling to the states now is relatively cheap in comparison to some of the more farther flung places on the globe.
I decided when I was thirty years old that I was going to make a long time dream a reality. I was going to go to Disney Land! I went online that day and found some cheap flights to America and I booked them there and then. I was determined not to let this thing go, and I knew that the only way I would do it was by purchasing the plain tickets with my credit card – and that way I would have to follow up with everything else!
I did eventually get my tickets to Disney Land and I have to say that despite my age I had one of the best hollidays I have ever had! I also feel as if I have in some way exorsized a ghost for myself in that I have finally gone to the place that I never thought I would get to.
Xinjiang, typical continental arid climate, has a large temperature difference between day and night. As the old saying goes, “wear coats at early morning but silk cloths at the afternoon, and eat watermelons by sitting around the stove.” Only in the Urumqi and its surrounding areas, the temperature difference reaches to 12 to 15 degree. While at the Heavenly Lake, 110 kms away from Urumqi, with altitude of 1980 meters, the temperature difference is even greater. To be surprised, it is failing to prevent visitors to explore the wonderful myths and legends there. You can go there easily via the cheap flights to China.
Recommendations: Tourists coming to Heavenly Lake should better bring a sweater or coat to prevent cold due to the excessive change. Besides, the altitude sickness and fractures should be prevented.
Turpan – Hot and dry weather
Although Turpan has the Grape Valley, Karez Well, Flaming Hill and so on, the most deeply remembered thing perhaps is its hot weather.
Recommendations: Do not forget to bring along some water, and UV-preventing clothes and make-ups. In addition to drinking plenty of water, visitors should also avoid heat stroke and nose bleeding. People need wear light-colored and absorbent properties long-sleeved clothes as often as possible, use skin care products, wear hats and sunglasses to prevent the sun’s ultraviolet hurt.
Kashigar – Having lots of delicious foods
It is equal to no record to Xinjiang if you have not been to Kashigar. As the best embodies of Xinjiang’s rich ethnic styles, Id kah Mosque, Abakh Khoja Tomb Erdaoqiao Bazaar leave tourists the best memories.
Recommendations: Travelers coming from central China will possibly be not accustomed to the local Islamic dining, or will cope with the stomach upset. Because Kashi is located at the edge of Takla Makan desert, the little precipitation requires people to drink lots of water. Eating fruits at Kashi is an important event, but you’d better avoid drinking hot water after eating some fruits.
Kanasi – Beautiful sceneries
There are 1100 kms to 1200 kms from Urumqi to Kanasi. During the two days, most time will be used to appreciate the scenery along the way. As a result, people are easy to be tired.
Recommendations: In order to cope with the carsickness, old persons, children and some bad physical quality persons should better not climb mountains. People who visit Kanasi need bring or borrow cotton coats in case catching a cold.

Twenty years ago, Ayatollah Khomeini called for the assassination of Salman Rushdie—and writers around the world instinctively rallied to Rushdie’s defense. Today, according to writer Paul Berman, “Rushdie has metastasized into an entire social class”—an ever-growing group of sharp-tongued critics of Islamist extremism, especially critics from Muslim backgrounds, who survive only because of pseudonyms and police protection. At the moment, it’s easy to see how some people would be worried about vacation costs this year. Travel is too expensive for many people because of the economy and threats of layoffs. However, there are still cheap travel destinations if you are willing to do your homework. The bulk of your vacation cost will probably go towards your flight and your hotel stay. So, finding a cheap flight and taking advantage of other options can greatly reduce the cost of your vacation. Here are the top five cheap flight destinations that you should consider:
New York City and Other Big Cities
You can often find cheap flights to New York City and other big cities because they are home to large airports. When you fly into a large airport, you have more airline options, which can lower the price. Big cities can be a lot of fun, but are not usually high on the list for tourist destinations, since people are more likely to want to head to the beach or mountains for vacation. As an added bonus, that means that other activities in the cities are also less expensive. Most big cities even have government-sponsored museums, parks, and zoos which are free or under $10 for admission.
Florida or Southern California (more…)
